Time for a Rant!

July 4, 2009

Ok, first things first. If this works, I’m sure you’ll be saying “But David! I thought you were away from the computer for the weekend?” Well, yes. Luckily, I’m so clever, talented, witty, handsome, intelligent, attractive, modest, err, where was I going with this again? Oh, right. I can set it to update at a certain time. I’m writing this in the past! So, here, for you entertainment, is a rant about Cadbury and their new chocolate recipe.  Here we go:

Cadbury Chocolate have changed their chocolate recipe. Instead of Cocoa Butter, they now use some sort of oil. I’ve not tried it, but, apparently, it tastes worse, takes longer to melt in your mouth, and leaves a horrible aftertaste. As well as this, they’ve changed the size of their King-sized block from 250 grams to 200. That’s a 20% reduction in size, and they sell it for the same price. They have done this in the name of the customer, saying it’s for our benefit.

Well, as a Cadbury Customer, I can say that this is not a good move. What kind of idiot cubicle stuffer in marketing came up with this genius idea? Reduce size and make it taste worse?  THAT’S a good idea! Do they want us all to shift over to Whittakers or Hersheys? Congratulations, Cadbury, you have lost a customer.

They blame these changes on the recession, saying that in these tough times they need to cut costs. Well, you know what? To hell with the recession! I’d pay more for the same, if I had to, but not the same for less.

So, my final word on the matter. Cadbury are a bunch of idiots. They’ve made this stupid decision, which has lead to a large uproar from chocolate fans and consumers. I’m sure I’m not the only person complaining about it. In fact, I’m positive. I’ve seen other bloggers complaining about it. I imagine that their cost cutting, profit seeking, goblin-y ways will have a lot more negative outcomes than positive. What are the positives, as far as I can see?

Well, they save money making it. That’s about it. What are the negatives? There is less chocolate, worse taste and, because of this, I assume they’ll have less customers, which means less money, which means all attempts at cutting costs will be rendered useless.

Bravo Cadbury. You’ve screwed up royally. I, for one, welcome Whittakers, our new Chocolate Producing Overlords.

  1. The new packaging is cardboard I assume to make the product seem the same size. It didn’t taste much different to us in Photography though.

  2. Whittaker’s > Cadbury any day, even with the old recipe!

  3. Whittaker’s Coconut and Peanut (& Raisin) Slabs – the best in the world!!!

  4. But David! How does your attractiveness help you update at a certain time?…

Cadbury were crafty, they changed the packaging so that everyone went “ooh ahh it’s now packaged in cardboard, I bet that’s so it’s environmentally friendly and recyclable. Cadbury is my hero.” But really, it was just to distract from the fact that they’re giving you less for your money and not as good quality.

    Lindt does the best chocolate.
